Welcome to another edition
of the Quill Pen Ten. Veterans of the OpinionEditorials.com community know it as the QPT. The QPT is a collection of the
ten most-interesting and most-popular op-eds of the preceding week.
The QPT is brought to
you by your friends at Frontiers of Freedom. Frontiers is a non-profit, non-partisan public policy organization dedicated
to protecting the constitutional rights of all Americans and restoring constitutional limits on the extent and power of government.
Presenting the Quill Pen Ten:
Jason F. Wright: First Do No Harm: Early Signs on Telecom Re-Write Ominous As they consider revisiting the landmark 1996 Telecommunications Act, Congress should use as its guiding principle the
old medical maxim: "First, do no harm."...
Dan Abbett: Refocusing the Energy Just reading the headlines in the mainstream press is enough to edge one toward depression. Karl Rove and “Scooter”
Libby are headed for the Big House, Texas Prosecutor Ronnie Earle has already reserved a cell for Tom Delay, Bill Frist is
in a stock twist, Dick Cheney is going to resign and thanks to George Bush’s bungling, the war in Iraq is all but lost.
When you throw in the Harriet Miers debacle, a brisk upswing in the sale of Prozac is a near certainty...
Jim Kouri, CPP: Hillary in 2008: All Hail Ms. President For many Americans it may be hard to stomach, but it's almost a certainty that the next President of these United States
will be Hillary Rodham Clinton. We've had two Bush family presidencies, now it's time for the second of two presidencies for
the Clinton family. If things develop for Senator Clinton as predicted by yours truly, the Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton dynasty
will have led and will lead the United States for a possible total of 28 consecutive years...
Lee P. Butler: Media Wants Heads To Roll At White House, Not The Truth In CIA Investigation A recent Associated Press article written by Tom Raum started this way: “Special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald’s
CIA-leak inquiry is focusing attention on what long has been a Bush White House tactic: slash-and-burn assaults on its critics,
particularly those opposed to the president’s Iraq war policies.”...
Frank Salvato: The Harriet Miers Nomination: Ideology Over Process It would seem that the squeaky wheel has once again gotten the grease. Dissension from the far right has caused Harriet
Miers to reconsider her nomination to the United States Supreme Court. They see it as a victory and when viewed as one, very
specific issue it is. But it is just like the Republican Party – and conservatives in general – to mistakenly
celebrate the victory of a single battle in the face of a larger war...
Chuck Muth: GOP Plan to Tax You Out of House & Home We interrupt our regularly-scheduled red-meat coverage of Supreme Court nominations, politically-inspired indictments,
amnesty for illegal aliens and pork-barrel spending to bring you a discussion about...GSEs. Wait! Don’t touch that
dial. Before your eyes glaze over, know that today’s topic, while not “sexy,” is critically important to
those of you who might want to buy a house in the post-Greenspan era - complete with another example of Republicans in Congress
wandering off the conservative reservation....
Doug Hagin: Miers Withdrawal, What a Great Opportunity for the GOP! When a person is wrong, they should simply admit it and move on. Therefore, I admit that I was misguided in my most recent
column. Apparently, Harriet Miers is not the proper choice for a seat on the Supreme Court after all. Clearly, President Bush,
despite his stellar record on appointing well-qualified judges during his time in office, missed quite badly with his choice
of Miers. I was wrong, and so was President Bush, now the question is, “where do we go from here?”...
Joe Mariani: A Mulligan on Miers Some years ago, a good friend asked me to be the best man at his wedding. The problem was, I wasn't sure he was making
the right decision, and several of our mutual friends had already expressed similar doubts to me in private. So I sat him
down and told him the truth. What else could a true friend do? I asked him flat out whether he was marrying this girl mostly
because he feared he was getting old, and thought that he might not find a better match...
Joe Bell: Control Of Supreme Court Is Worth A Fight The good news is that the nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court has been withdrawn. The concern is that Senate
Republicans seem to lack the will to behave like the majority party and announce that they will stand united in support of
a nominee who has the proven commitment to make judicial decisions based upon the law as written and not legislate from the
bench and base decisions on the social whims of the moment...
Gregory Rummo: What the Miers Nomination Taught Us On Oct. 3, President Bush stunned many political pundits with these words: "This morning, I'm proud to announce that I
am nominating Harriet Ellan Miers to serve as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. For the past five years, Harriet Miers
has served in critical roles in our nation's government, including one of the most important legal positions in the country,
White House Counsel. She has devoted her life to the rule of law and the cause of justice. She will be an outstanding addition
to the Supreme Court of the United States."...
